There’s a reason Pewter Green was named one of our favorite Sherwin Williams paint colors of 2024. This chameleon-like color is a dark green paint with gray undertones and a hint of blue. The gray and blue undertones give it an almost metallic look in direct sunlight — which is where it gets its name — but the olive tone makes it look rich and earthy in indirect light. There’s a reason why this rich, earthy hue was the Sherwin Williams’ 2021 color of the year. The dark and warm greige shade offers a nearly unbeatable range, making it as inviting on quaint cottages as it is on modern houses. With an LRV of 8, the dark shade adds drama without being too close to black, and the earth-toned color pairs with any accents, from wood to metal.
Combine Cool Colors and Warm Wood
At this house, cobalt blue turns an entry door enchanting and repeats in simple lines accenting the roof and soffits. Three rich colors used in just the right proportions give this home a striking look. This Prairie-style house is coated in a creamy buttermilk yellow that's rich enough to be unique, but not too bold. The subdued yellow is complemented by deep red trim throughout the exterior and a dark green balustrade on the second floor. These colors all work together to create the ideal retro yet fresh exterior.
Classic Exterior Paint Colors
It has an LRV of 60, which makes it slightly lighter than Revere Pewter’s 55. It’s also a hair cooler, meaning in some lighting situations it can veer a little closer to gray than greige. As you can see in the room below, it definitely doesn’t look like pure cool gray though – it still has that warmth to balance it. For instance, we wanted to paint a complimentary, but deeper greige on the ceiling of our foyer. The walls were already BM Edgecomb Gray (with an LRV of 63) so we went with BM Revere Pewter (with an LRV of 55) on the ceiling.
Modern House Colors for Your Home's Exterior
The chalky matte finish on the green exterior paint is a great way to make non-neutrals pair well together. The choice to paint the picket fence hunter green, rather than traditional white, keeps the attention on the home's sage green door. If you lean towards cool-toned home exteriors rather than warm ones, painting your siding gray might be right for you. To add a splash of color and character to an all-gray home, try painting the front door mustard yellow. Gray and yellow are a longtime go-to color combination, and choosing a more muted yellow tone keeps the accent color from looking too prominent.

Off-white cream siding gives a warm and low-contrast backdrop for a soft, peach-colored front door and matching shutters. Tones of the peach hue are also found in the shingles and mismatched siding in the peak of the gables, tying together the color palette. While yellow and orange make you think of the warmth of the sun, blue has long been thought of as a comforting color — and comfort is inviting. While all people react differently to different colors, Psychology Today points out that blue lights have been known to make people feel at ease.
Exterior Accent Colors
Earth tones and natured-inspired hues like Ashwood Moss continue to be popular with homeowners. This graphite-green is dark, with an LRV of 10.46, and can work with both traditional and modern homes (and everything in between). Whether lime green or citrus orange, add something unexpected to your home’s decor this year.
Golden Straw – Benjamin Moore
Black paint highlights sashes and dentil moldings around the windows and the door trim. To direct traffic to the front door, white columns frame the front steps. Red and blue is a classic exterior color combination that looks good all year. Shutters painted deep navy blue match the front door and frame the windows without stealing the show.
White Brick + Pale Pink
For inspiration, consider your home’s style and scale as well as architectural styles typical of your neighborhood and region. “The best exterior colors are contextual to their environment,” Rill observes. Wordly Gray (SW 7043) is very similar to BM Revere Pewter, although just a hair lighter and cooler.
The grey cabinets welcome a thoroughly modern vibe and the countertops add to it. The grey units feel heavenly with the addition of brass and make it look glamourous too. Soft blue is versatile, working on most homes depending on the undertone. It coordinates well with brick, stone accents, and natural wood or white trim. Light, muted blues can give your home a calming feel, while mid-toned to darker shades add drama. Benjamin Moore is one of our go-to companies for exterior paint colors, so it’s only natural that many of their hues made our roundup of the best of the best for 2024.
This gray hue is made by blending black and white pigments, creating a neutral gray perfect for modern exteriors. You can use this color on almost all architectural styles, from traditional brick homes to more modern styles. Bright white home exteriors pair with all accent colors, although black is one of the top shutter and trim choices. Cheating Heart is a beautiful blend of black, gray, and navy, and you’ll notice different undertones depending on the amount of light your home is exposed to. Pairing Cheating Heart with a lighter color, like Benjamin Moore’s Simply White (above), will create a crisp contrast. But we also love how the hue looks when used in conjunction with red brick or warm-colored stone.
With so many colors to choose from, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed as you begin to explore options. But if you need help deciding which direction to go in, we've asked design experts to share their 15 favorite modern paint colors that work well for exteriors. One of the benefits of colors that are light but not quite white is that they don't show grime as easily.
Though these two colors might be on opposite sides of the color wheel they are a timeless combination. The wooden build on the top gives a nice finishing touch to this space. If you’re ready to go to the dark side, this hue is a bold and modern way to do it. While you can soften Iron Ore with natural elements like wood or brick, with an LRV of 6, this dark shade usually appears nearly black. You can use white trim and wood accents with a soft yellow exterior. You can complement an earthy green home with black or white trims and shutters.
While a white exterior color scheme has classic appeal, there are ways to update and modernize that choice. Classic white siding appears crisp and clean against these lush green surroundings. Contrasting black accents, like window frames, gutters, and a front door, highlight the modern architecture and the home’s linear features. Weathered wood planks draw attention to the front porch, bringing in a modern rustic element and warming up the two-tone color scheme. Give your house a refresh, starting with a brand-new exterior color scheme.
For example, this could be a dark gray for the dominant color, an off-white as the medium tone, and black as the accent tone to be used throughout. The most popular color for a home exterior is a white or off-white tone, mainly because it’s a great way to refresh a home and bring light and life back to the curb appeal. Here, it’s used on the shutters and really stands out against the painted brick. Senior Color Designer, Sue Kim of Valspar, believes 2019 will be all about high-intensity shades that mimic artificial light. “Smart technology in the home is driving the color experience differently,” Kim said. Twilight Mist from Valspar is a blue-lilac hue that pairs well with ultra white.
